About us

A family tradition

Going back to the beginning of the 19th Century, the Tomasos family derives from the island of Chios in Greece . In 1822, as consequence of the Turkish invasion and slaughter, Capt.Christodoulos Tomasos moved with his family to Leros Island.

His son Capt.Stamatis Tomasos ( 1845-1912 ) managed the barque “PALMIER” in 1879 and was sailing and trading mainly in the Black and Mediterranean sea. Capt.Stamatis had numerous sons and daughters.
Among these we mention Capt.Nikolaos Tomasos (1870-1934) who was the first Captain in Leros sailing as Master on a steamship, the M/V “MARIGO” and Capt.Constantino Tomasos (1883-1958), who like some of the other brothers received his education at the Maritime School of Syros , became a master at sea , and then , initially alone in 1910 and at a later stage with his brothers Adamantios and Emmnuel in 1916 established a shipping agency.

Capt. Constantino with his wife Theano Binikos had five children, sons and daughters, Emmanuel, Rosa, Eftichia, Nicos and Maria.

In the middle of previous century the shipping company expanded and went into a larger scale of Management.

Initially the company managed small motor-ships sailing between the Mediterranean Sea and the Continent, their names were “THEANO”, “AMPHION” and “ROSA”. Given the opportunities of the sixties and seventies the Company moved on to larger tween-deckers, of 11.000 to 16.000 tons DWT, such as the “THEANO”, “GIOVANNA”, “ANDRIA”, “CAPETAN COSTIS” and “GEORGIOS”.

In the mid seventies- early eighties, the tween-deckers were gradually substituted with bulkcarriers of 14.000 to 28.000 tons DWT, like the “STELLA”, “GIOVANNA”, “THEANO”, “VANNA”, and “ALEXIS”.

These bulk-carriers were also gradually replaced by larger bulk-carriers at sizes, which increased according to the market needs from 54.000 to 75.000 DWT such as the “CAPETAN COSTIS”, “ROSA”, “SONIA”, “CHARIKLEIA” and “THEANOULA”.

At the end of the eighties the company managed ten large bulk-carriers and entered into the tanker industry.
